Why Santiago?
The area around Santiago was settled by indigenous communities centuries before the arrival of the Spanish, who founded the city in the 1500s and designed the grid-like layout it still follows today. You can see the Plaza de Armas, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Governor’s House as surviving examples of this era.
Wandering the streets is our favourite way to get the feel of a city, but in Santiago you’ll want to be sure to also climb the steps to the top of San Cristóbal Hill. This is the best viewpoint in the city and all the better to appreciate Santiago’s numerous museums, galleries, theatres and cultural monuments.
