Location
Set in 40 hectares of lush tropical grounds, to say nothing of the thousands more spreading beyond, Amor Arenal is three hours from San José. The settlement of La Fortuna, hub for all the adventures in the Arenal area is 10 minutes away by car, but you couldn’t feel further away from society in this area of secluded rainforest.
Accommodation
The 31 standalone casitas (“little houses”) are notable for their awesome views over the verdant rainforest canopy towards mighty Arenal Volcano. From the luxury of your huge bed below a vaulted ceiling, you look out of panoramic windows onto a suspended deck with mineral-water plunge pool and Adirondack seats. The fine hardwood construction of the casita and its interior draw you out, and the outside in, to make this a truly immersive experience. Even in the shower (a double rain shower), you will be looking out into the rainforest through a floor-to-ceiling window.
The Arenal area is famous for its healing mineral-rich water, which Amor Arenal puts to good use in its three communal pools. Surrounded by gorgeous lush plants, rocks and wooden decking two of the pools are notable for their curvaceous natural feel, whilst the third is home to a 40° swim-up bar. If relaxation through cocktails isn’t your thing, you may be drawn to the wellness spa, meditation deck and gym.

The El Rancho restaurant occupies a high vaulted building with an open wall and a terrace looking towards the volcano. The cuisine of the world is brought to your plate, and there is also a Costa Rican tasting menu. Food is also available at La Jaranita tapas bar, where each table is fitted with a personal mini-grill for you to create your own barbeque combinations to fill your gallitos mini tacos. At afternoon tea at La Granea you may feel it more appropriate to opt for one of Costa Rica’s famous coffee roasts to accompany Amor Arenal’s own pastries.
Experiences
- Wildlife experiences start right outside your casita window, but you will want to venture round the grounds past streams and waterfalls to see toucans and swinging monkeys.
- For another ecologically immersive experience, take the 10 minute journey to the private wildlife reserve of Mistico Park.
- Experts will educate you about the plants and animals.
- There are plenty of hikes through the forest and across the lava fields of the Arenal National park but, unsurprisingly, you are not allowed to climb to the summit. For an alternative and safe volcanic hiking experience, climb extinct Cerro Chato.
- If you have a head for heights and want to experience the rainforest from canopy level, you can cross hanging bridges and canopy walkways, and even fly on a zip wire. Adventurous guests also opt for canyoneering.
- Take a croaking night excursion to Arenal Oasis, home to 30 different species of colourful tree frogs.
