Location
The Andaz Papagayo Resort is situated along the beautiful Papagayo Peninsula in the province of Guanacaste. This popular spot is on the coast of the Pacific, and borders Nicaragua to the north. A true tropical paradise, the peninsula was formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The resort reflects the lively spirit of this region.
Accommodation
Within the choice of 153 rooms (including 21 suites), there are several grades to opt between. One decision to make is whether to stay in the main hotel or in the rounded shell-like tree houses featuring walk-in rainforest showers and private balconies. Whatever you choose, all rooms are modern and spacious, with ocean views, a floor-to-ceiling window, and wood panelling.
Dine like a local as you eat in one of the resort’s three restaurants, each serving an array of Latin American dishes, and delicious fresh fruit from the region. Rio Bhongo, the hotel’s all-day open-air option, offers local cuisine and we suggest you try its famous ceviche-making class. The signature restaurant, Ostra, has intimate booths and a terrace. There is even a coffee shop serving the finest Costa Rican chocolate and coffee.

The hotel boasts four swimming pools, of which one is adults-only. Three pools are on a jungle-canopied terrace below the Rio Bhongo restaurant, and two of these are free-form and rock-surrounded but with an infinity edge towards the superb view of the bay. If the pool isn’t your thing, the resort has access to three beaches, two of which are on-site and accessed easily along a raised walkway. The more distant beach, Playa Nacascolo, has a fabulous beach house and can be accessed using a free shuttle or speedboat.
Experiences
- Spend time in the spa, with its superb views. It has nine treatment rooms and offers a range of rejuvenating treatments.
- Visit Palo Verde National Park, known for its mangroves and for the jabiru bird, the largest stork in the world. Mammals found here include armadillos, agoutis and monkeys.
- Golf enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them occupied at the peninsula’s Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course with its world-class 18 holes.
- We recommend a day trip to the dwarf tropical dry forest of Santa Rosa National Park, one of the last remaining examples of this endangered ecosystem.
- Extroverts will love the humming beach town of Tamarindo. It is also an ideal place for surfing, for both beginners and experts.

Environment
The ‘organic style’ used in the design melds the structures with the landscape. The discrete, low-rise buildings establish a dialogue with contrasting ecosystems – not apart from nature but integrated into a harmonious whole.
