Location
One of the great advantages of Hotel Cruz del Vado is its centrality to the historic centre of the beautiful Ecuadorean city of Cuenca. The hotel is near the Cruz del Vardo monument, after which the hotel is named, from which there is a marvellous view. Cuenca itself is set amongst the southern peaks of the Ecuadorean Andes, 300km south of Quito.
Accommodation
The pink Italian marble façade of Hotel Cruz del Vado highlights it as a building of historic importance, and it was, in fact, the former home of Cuenca’s first newspaper, El Murcurio. The stylish opulence continues inside; the lobby contains a striking juxtaposition of exposed Ecuadorean brickwork, chandeliers, boldly upholstered chairs, polished wood and interesting artefacts. The 26 guest rooms are similarly furnished, and the style is invigorating and inspiring rather than overbearing. The rooms contain all the modern conveniences that you would expect from a top-class hotel.
You will love visiting the hotel’s restaurant and rooftop bar, Cúpulas Azules because not only is the food inventive and delicious, but the views are wonderful. You will look out over the whole of Cuenca and to the mountains that surround it. We recommend being here for sunset.
Experiences
- Enjoy the hotel-based activity of tasting Paccari, the best-quality Ecuadorean chocolate. You will have the whole history of the use of cacao explained to you.
- Take a tour of the hotel’s art collection with the knowledgeable concierge.
- The concierge will also arrange visits to local artisans for you. Guests regularly visit local potters, blacksmiths, guitar-makers and flute-makers. Despite its name, the Panama Hat is native to Cuenca, so perhaps visit a hat maker, or the hat museum.
- Just a few steps from the hotel is the Forbidden Cultural Centre, the quirky gallery of a local artist.
- If there is time only to see one historic site in Cuenca, then make it the Incan city of Pumapungo. You will see the remains of ritual baths and the aqueduct system.
- Few tourists know about the Piedra de Agua hot springs, so you will soak your aching feet amongst the locals.
