Location
The striking French Republic-style hotel Itza can be found near the banks of the Tombebamba River and at the very heart of the charming UNESCO World Heritage city of Cuenca. It’s about 5km from the city’s airport, making it very convenient for transfers.
Accommodation
Built in the 1930s, this boutique hotel has just 15 guest rooms, many with excellent views over the city of Cuenca. The style of the rooms is opulent with art-deco flourishes; most have fantastic tiled or painted ceilings, some have balconies.
Enjoy local and international dishes in the hotel’s ground floor restaurant, or relax in the club-style leather chairs of the Whiskey Lounge.

It’s an extremely popular venue for locals, so it can get quite busy; you will need to book a table in advance.

- It is only 300m to walk before you find yourself at the Museum of Skeletons, housing paleontological finds. For a human ghoulish experience, find the shrunken heads at the Pumapungo Museum.
- Also very close to the hotel are the cultural attractions of the Museum of the Cañari Identity and the Straw Hat Museum.
- You will love browsing the Mercado 10 de Agosto. Another market well-worth visiting is the orchid market near the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
- Of the numerous churches, we rate the best as Catedral Nueva, which lines Cuenca’s central park.
- Whilst in Cuenca, you must visit Ingapirca, site of the largest Inca ruin in Ecuador. Combine this with a ride up the mountain railway to the “Devil’s Nose”.
