Location
You’ll find Lewa House nestled on a hill overlooking Mount Kenya to the south and the Mathews Range and the mountain of Ol Olokwe to the north.
Accommodation
The MacFarlanes live on the property, having re-established it recently on land which belonged to Sophie’s grandparents. The three charming family cottages are spread along the hillside, and consist of two bedrooms and bathrooms, and a shared veranda with stunning views. There are also four Earth Pods which have one bedroom, an en-suite bathroom, and private veranda. All are constructed from traditional Lewa materials.
Experiences
- Game drives and bush walks in Lewa offer excellent wildlife viewing with opportunities to see lion, elephant, giraffe and even wild dog.
- The conservancy is home to 14% of the world’s black rhino, as well as 20% of the Grevy’s Zebra - so keep your eyes peeled for these endangered species.
- Spend a day at the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve walking the 10m high canopy walk, swimming in beautifully blue natural pools and, if you’re feeling adventurous, jump in from the top of a waterfall.
- Spend an afternoon crabbing in the nearby springs - a favourite amongst families who visit Lewa.

Conservancy and tourism fees paid by every guest that stays at Lewa directly contributes to the operating costs of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Total tourism fees typically contribute over 20% of the total raised by the Conservancy, while visitors on safari also make up a significant proportion of the donations to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
Environment
The property is made using local materials, not only supporting local communities, but also reducing air miles. Furthermore, structures are built in an unobtrusive way, nestled into the landscape in order to minimise any impact on the local ecosystem.
Community
Lewa House helps support the conservancy to invest extensively in the local community through several innovative programmes, ranging from micro-credit schemes to medical clinics and schools.
