Location
Though only 100km from Quito, Mashpi Lodge sits in secluded isolation at an altitude of 950m in the midst of Ecuadors Chocó-Andean cloud forest. It is well-worth the adventurous three hour drive to reach it.
Accommodation
Mashpi Lodge is an architectural wonder. With maximum possible use of glass to give guests the greatest potential experience of the surrounding forest, it is as both eye-catching and sympathetic to its position in equal measure. You will be glad to know that not a single tree was cut down during its construction.
The 24 rooms in the lodge are contemporary and stylish with hints of nature throughout, such as bamboo screens and floor-to-ceiling views of the forest awaiting you outside. Featuring marble furnishings, king-size beds, and bathtubs with a view, there are definitely elements that are more luxury retreat than a mere “lodge”. From your somewhat remarkable chair in the restaurant, glass surrounds you on three sides and you will be served gourmet dishes created from local ingredients. The bar serves innovative cocktails and a selection of Chilean and Argentinian wines.
With plenty of outdoor terraces, seats and tables to choose from, you will be able relax in comfort surrounded by the sounds and sights of the cloud forest. We recommend early morning birdwatching from the viewing platform, which is unsurpassed.
Experiences
- The lodge has its own laboratory, home to research projects based in the Mashpi Reserve. Here you can learn about the work of ecologists. It will appeal to guests of all ages and levels of knowledge; there is even a discovery area for children.
- The lodge’s “Life Centre” is an easy 20 minute stroll away. We recommend having breakfast here in the company of the abundant bird life and butterflies of the lodge’s butterfly farm.
- Chill out or educate yourself in the Expedition Room, location of both the lodge’s library and of the evening presentations given by the lodge’s experts.
- You will fly through the canopy of the cloud forest on the Dragonfly gondola. Another high-up experience is to climb the observation tower and then pedal aloft on a “sky bike”.
- Of the many day hikes on offer, we recommend opting to visit the thundering Mashpi waterfalls. Another great experience is to commune with the frogs on a night hike.
