Location
Formed 2.5 million years ago after an ancient volcano erupted and then collapsed, the Ngorongoro crater is one of Tanzania’s most unique safari destinations. Thousands of birds and animals live here among the grasslands and Lake Magadi.
Entering Ngorongoro Crater is an experience all its own. You’ll drive up steep, winding roads and then descend over the rim of the crater. The views are wonderful and it only gets better as you make your way to the crater floor. Elephants, warthogs, antelope, lion and even cheetah, leopard and black rhino can be spotted.
Listening to grunting hippos wallow in the shallows of Lake Magadi, unbothered by surrounding flamingos. You might even catch the lake looking as pink as the birds when its surface is rich with nutritious algae. Come for a stay or stay a while in the area – Ngorongoro Crater is excellent for vehicle safaris, but it’s also possible to hike and explore neighbouring volcanoes.

Luxury Above the Crater
Almost a mile wide, the Ngorongoro Crater is the idyllic relic of an ancient volcano.
The emerald scenery is only interrupted by the sapphire soda lake, seasonally transformed pink with thousands of migratory flamingo. These are your waking views at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.
The interior of the lodge is equally stunning. Intricate chandeliers drape from vaulted, thatch ceilings and the traditional Maasai furnishings are contrasted by teak furniture swathed in crimson and gold brocades.

Exclusive Comfort and Fine Dining
For families, we’ll arrange an adjoining suite. Within you’ll find plush armchairs and a fireplace. Walk past it onto your private viewing deck — the perfect place to watch zebra grazing below with a coffee each morning.
You’ll sleep like royalty in your four-poster bed. In the main lodge you’ll find central dining, though you’ll also have private dining options.
Childminders are available to watch the kids while you enjoy a three course meal in the wine cellar, while other times you can eat together on your deck.

Safari on the Crater Floor
The safari experience in the crater is one of a kind, with game drives through crater floor meadows. The foliage is fed by the volcanic soil, creating a fertile feeding ground for over 10,000 animals.
You can enjoy a lunch next to the lake, watching hippo before enjoying afternoon walks through the lodge grounds.
Children ages four and up will be smitten with the WILDChild programme, where they will learn all about the incredible heritage of the region, filling their personal scrapbook with all they’ve learned.

Conservation
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge’s parent company; &Beyond was formed in 1991 with the goal of successfully demonstrating that a financially sound, wildlife-based tourism operator could make a significant contribution to conservation and biodiversity, whilst also promoting sustainable community development. Falling back on the true definition of responsible travel; travel that not only positively impacts the land and its wildlife, but also the people who live in and around these wildlife areas, they have achieved this goal.
Environment
A considerable amount of daily intervention by &Beyond is required to help maintain a harmonious balance in the fragile ecosystems within which they operate. Doing things in sustainable ways allows Mother Nature to run her course and maintain this balance.
Community
&Beyond are committed to employing from local communities surrounding their camps. They also ensure that their staff are taken on a journey of continuous growth and development. Training takes place in three steps: ‘Footprints’; the growth of skills. ‘Life’; a programme that looks at the holistic wellness of staff members. And finally, ‘Academy’ which builds on the qualifications gained by staff as they continue to work.
