Location
Set within a 2000 hectare ecological reserve around Pilchicocha Lake near the banks of the Napo River, Sacha Lodge is a 25 minute flight from Quito, followed by the adventure of a two hour boat ride into the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Accommodation
You will find yourself relaxing on the shady terrace, perhaps snoozing in your hammock, of one of the 26 rooms and cabins secreted in the rainforest. Natural materials such as wood and thatch are used alongside floor to ceiling glass, blurring the line between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Comfort is assured with air conditioning and large private bathrooms with hot showers, along with plenty of space. Three family cabins provide even more room and comfort.
Guests at Sacha Lodge share use of The Balsa (Spanish for “raft”) restaurant and bar on the lakeside: this covered al fresco lounge area is a great place to read a book, witness Ecuador’s famous sunsets, or to sit and watch the caiman in the water. Additionally, the rustic wooden Oropendola restaurant is also right on the water’s edge. Dining in the jungle has never been so luxurious. The freshest ingredients - locally sourced wherever possible - are used to create gourmet cuisine.
The lodge features a lake pool: a netted area where you can take a cooling dip in the inky waters of oxbow-lake Pilchicocha without fear of interference from the otters and caimans swimming by.
Experiences
- Paddle a canoe along the tranquil black water creeks surrounding Sacha Lodge. In the quiet cool of the morning, you may spot pygmy marmosets, abundant bird life and possibly even a puma.
- Spending time with the Providencia Community of Yasuní will give you the chance to discover about the traditional way of life and the use of the rainforest by the Kichwa people.
- From the great buttress roots of a 50m giant Kapok tree, you will climb up to the top of the 43m observation tower. Follow this with the Canopy Walk, a bridge spanning more than 250m at a height of 30m above the forest floor. You will also have the chance to ride gently up in the cage of a crane to experience every layer of the forest in comfort.
- A night walk or canoe trip with spotlights will reveal those animals most active after dark. Looking for Caimans will get your heart racing.
- A highlight found near Sacha Lodge is Ecuador’s most accessible parrot lick; exposed clay where parrots flock in large numbers to eat the exposed minerals.
- Stroll through Sacha Lodge’s very own butterfly house to have an up-close experience with spectacular species of all shapes, sizes and colours.
