Snow leopard are infamously shy, but the trackers and conservationists here have spent years studying their behaviour and getting to know their hideouts, so you have an incomparable chance of seeing them during the winter months.
Accommodation
Snow Leopard Lodge is an intimate property with just eleven rooms split across the main building and the newly built annexe. There is gas heating and hot water bottles in the beds to ensure you’re cosy all night long.
Staff provide hot water for bucket showers in the mornings, and you will have the rare opportunity to sit with a Ladakhi family and share traditional Ladakhi meals. The rooms are simple, but you will have everything that you need.
Experiences
The raison d’etre for staying here is, of course, the snow leopard. The trackers are the best in the Himalayas, with a rare intuition as to where the snow leopard will be. The animals aren’t radio collared, but an informal network of villagers and shepherds reports their latest whereabouts to the Snow Leopard Lodge team, making it much easier to pursue them by 4x4 and on foot.
Depending on the snow leopard’s location, the daily hikes may be physically strenuous. This is more than made up for, though, by the majestic mountain vistas, the chance to learn about local Buddhist culture and folklore, and the unforgettable feeling when you have your first snow leopard sighting.
