Location
The Sumaq Machu Picchu lies at the base of the Machu Picchu mountain, just a matter of feet from the flowing Vilcanota River. A 10 minute walk from the train station, this hotel is close enough to the amenities of Aguas Calientes, should you need them, but far enough away to be out of the hustle and bustle.
Accommodation
All the 62 rooms and suites at the Sumaq Machu Picchu look out onto either the river or the forest, many with balconies, so you are very much a part of the natural environment. The rich colours of the textiles and carpets complement the dark polished wood and the crisp, white linens on the king size beds. There are both bathtubs and rain showers in the ensuite bathrooms, and you’ll also have a mini bar and coffee machine.

Expect locally-sourced ingredients such as pumpkin, trout and alpaca to be presented brilliantly as haute cuisine. We recommend a post-dinner drink on the panoramic balcony of the Suquy bar.
The staff at the Sumaq Machu Picchu are acutely aware of the precious ecosystem they live and work in, so strive to meet the highest standards of sustainability. Their practices have been certified by the Rainforest Alliance, and they’ll be happy to share with you what they are doing to protect Machu Picchu’s surroundings for the next generation.

Experiences
- The daily afternoon ritual of tea on the first floor terrace is a Sumaq Machu Picchu speciality.
- Enjoy the fun and culturally-informative experience of pachamanca ground-cooking. The slow cooked food is tender and delicious.
- Spend an hour or two in the nearby lush Mandor gardens, one of the secrets of the area. Discover the 30m high waterfall.
- The trip to the Machu Picchu citadel is, of course, essential. For a more immersive and meaningful experience, perhaps go in the company of a local shaman. He might even perform a coca leaf reading for you.
