Location
Tortuga Lodge sits on the banks of a canal near the small town of Tortuguero, gateway to Tortuguero National Park on the north east coast of Costa Rica. With no road access, you will arrive at the lodge by boat. There’s also a small airstrip across the canal.

Accommodation
The lodge has 27 rooms, including rooms with balconies and even a penthouse suite. All of the rooms have excellent views of the river. There are no TVs or sophisticated sound systems; here, technology is replaced, helped by unglazed but screened windows, with the soundtrack of the enveloping tropical rainforest. Take time to switch off and enjoy the peacefulness of nature from a hammock, Adirondack chair or from the relaxing dipping pool. We love the riverside gazebo as a place to gaze out over the waters.
With 20 hectares of private rainforest reserve and a network of trails, you will find that there is plenty to occupy your thirst for adventure without having go too far. A walk through this lush environment will put you into the home of poison dart frogs, huge iridescent butterflies and troops of howler monkeys. Returning to the comforts of the lodge, you will be glad of a Caribbean-themed cocktail in the bar, followed by excellent Costa Rican food – with a contemporary twist – in the relaxed but classy setting of the lodge’s restaurant. We love the fact that they cater well for vegetarians.

Experiences
  • Set off on an early-morning walk through the lodge’s extensive gardens, with an expert wildlife and nature guide. These gardens are grand and sprawling, mimicking the traditional banana plantations that littered the Caribbean coast.

  • If you are here in July, August or September, you will be able to spot turtles nesting. The best time to see hatching is in October.
  • Glide down the hidden channels, surrounded by deep, thick forest, in a canal boat or kayak. You may spot river turtles, an otter or even a manatee. Look out for the 6 different species of Kingfisher.

  • Venture over to Tortuguero Village to engage in local culture and history. Follow this with a hike up Cerro Tortuguero for a bird’s eye view of this tropical paradise.

  • An unforgettable experience is to take a trip up the Caño Palma channel to Laguna 4 to spend the day with a local farming family. You will have food cooked using a traditional wood stove.
