Garden Route

A delightful meander along South Africa’s spectacular coastline

Your journey along the Garden Route will take you from the small coastal town of Mossel Bay along the coast to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. Soak up the beauty of the African landscape as you drive at a sedate pace, stopping frequently to hike, birdwatch, swim and catch the sun’s rays on golden beaches, canoe the famed lagoons, or maybe play a round of golf.

In the heart of the Garden Route is the town of Knysna, which is famous for its lagoon and wonderful oysters. The best seafood is to be had at the Knysna Quays waterfront complex. It is a sleepy little town with preserved Georgian and Victorian buildings where you can enjoy browsing in antique shops.

Close by, you will have the opportunity to ride one of the few remaining steam trains in Africa, the legendary Outeniqua Choo Tjoe. It runs to Mossel Bay, where from June to November you will see half the world’s species of whale and dolphin. At other times of year, the area is famous for its colonies of great white shark.
