Semliki

Verdant valley views await in this unspoilt rainforest

The woodlands of Semliki National Park are amongst the most ancient and biodiverse in Africa. The geology of the park is such that hot springs emerge, steaming from beneath the forest floor, accounting in some part for the lushness of the vegetation. The spring waters are far too hot to swim in when they come out of the ground, but you can hike through the forest and then have a great deal of fun cooking eggs and plantains in the boiling waters, making for a well earned snack.

Semliki attracts huge numbers of birds, both endemic and migrant species. 66% of Uganda’s forest bird species are found here, and there are 46 Guinea-Congo biome species which are found nowhere else in East Africa. Rarities to look out for include the Nkulengu rail, the yellow-throated cuckoo, and piping hornbill.

Around the perimeter of the park live Batwa groups, traditional hunter-gatherers who have called this part of Uganda their home for millennia. One community is currently building a boma, or cultural village, to host guests interested in learning about their way of life; others are eager to share their music and dance traditions with performances at Ntandi.
