A logical starting point for safaris in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire National Park, Arusha is worth its own stop before you continue on. Arusha National Park encompasses Mount Meru, a volcano that stands 4,566 metres tall and receives far less attention than its well-known 5,895-metre neighbour, Mount Kilimanjaro. Both mountains are beautiful and exceptional for hiking. If summiting Kili isn’t on your wish list, consider a day hike at the base of Mount Meru. You can see birds and a variety of small mammals while stretching your legs before or after safari.
