Why Central India?
Central India is home to the beautiful Hindu and Jain temples at Khajuraho, recognised by UNESCO and famed for their erotic sculptures. The 10th-century site rivals the likes of Bagan and Angkor Wat. Don’t miss the neolithic rock paintings at Bhimbetka, the impressive Bateshwar Temple, or the red sandstone fortress in Gwalior. The riverside chhatris and temples of Orchha are equally awe-inspiring.
For wildlife, Central India’s highlight is the Bandhavgarh National Park. The park is home to the highest concentration of tiger in India, and significant numbers of nilgai, gaur, Indian wolf and striped hyena live here too. You can combine your visit to Bandhavgarh with time at the Kanha Tiger Reserve to maximise chances of a wild sighting – but the animals are still quite elusive so you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled.
