House In The Wild

Masai Mara

Our View

House in the Wild is an intimate, family-owned luxury lodge that offers a high-quality safari experience and cottage options make it perfect for couples, families or groups friends. You’ll be in the heart of the iconic Kenyan wilderness with your own dedicated guide and private vehicle, meaning you can enjoy your safari at your own pace. Children are warmly welcomed here and free to roam, enjoy and explore the natural environment.

Location

The lodge sits on the banks of the famous Mara River in the Enonkishu Conservancy, a private conservancy on the northern edge of the Masai Mara. The lodge is also very close to two other conservancies, Ol Chorro and Lemek, giving you access to seemingly never ending wilderness and excellent wildlife viewing.

Accommodation

Originally a getaway home of the Wood family, the lodge has been lovingly restored and re-imagined by owners Tarquin and Lippa to provide guests with an exclusive safari experience that combines a range of exciting activities with great guiding, exceptional personalised service and a warm homely atmosphere.

Accommodation here comprises seven beautiful en-suite cottages (including three family cottages, each containing two ensuite bedrooms), all uniquely different. You’ll have a private veranda where you can sit back, relax and take in the views of the river or the unspoilt Kenyan plains. Some have outdoor showers or copper baths, another great spot for unwinding - sink yourself into a hot bath, watch the world go by, and reflect on what you’ve seen that day. The cottages have all been designed with warmth and home comforts in mind. Pale linens, plush soft furnishings and east African touches sprinkled throughout combine to create a cosy and comfortable sanctuary that you’ll relish in retreating to each evening.

The welcoming atmosphere is continued in the main areas of the lodge where you’ll find a lounge with a cosy, roaring fire. There are multiple areas where you can unwind, the swimming pool, bar, the main veranda or the lawns which look out onto the edge of the Mara River and Kileleoni Hill. You can lay back on the swinging beds with a good book and a glass of something cool in hand, or , if you’re feeling more energetic, enjoy a spot of tennis, croquet or badminton on the lawns. You’ll dine privately, with a variety of options - in the dining room, on your veranda or perhaps al fresco under the stars.

Experiences

— House in the Wild is the epitome of a family friendly property - the lodge welcomes children of all ages and hosts a wide variety of exciting activities.

— The lodge’s unique position gives you access to three wildlife-rich private conservancies to explore, as well as the opportunity to enjoy game drives into the Masai Mara National Reserve.

— During your stay, you will enjoy the flexibility of your own private guide and vehicle. Each morning your guide will plan your day around you, and so whether you decide to take a morning game drive, an afternoon walking safari, enjoy a spot of fishing in the river, make a visit to the local village or school, or even partake in a game of tennis, croquet or garden boules, he will be on hand to attend to your every need.

— With an abundance of additional activities on offer, no one will get bored here. Visit the nearby rhino sanctuary where you can track these incredible creatures on foot and learn all about them. Experience a genuine cultural immersion, spending an evening with a local family in their home. Head to the skies in a hot air-balloon or helicopter flight above the plains of the Masai Mara. Hire a camera and have photography lessons, or visit the Mara Elephant Project and learn about the incredible work being done to reduce human-wildlife conflict

Steve Backshall on House in the Wild
'Aside from game drives, we could watch wildlife wander past our lodge, from hippos to monitor lizard. But the manicured lawns, pool table, tennis court, archery and football allowed plenty of opportunity for my son to release some of his excess energy. There is a real sense of family at the property (that extends beyond the Wood family owners and encapsulates the entire property team) and our welcome couldn’t have been any warmer, or more genuine. There’s also a real sense of space and place – originally farmland, the land has been rewilded, and the conservancy that they have established with the local communities is incredible. Maasai homesteads, herdsman and livestock co-existing alongside big cats, giraffe and zebra.'
