Island Hideaways

Wake to the salty breath of the ocean breeze on a private island retreat

Our world has more than 100,000 islands, from tiny coral atolls to the expanses of Greenland and Borneo. For the most part, however, the island hideaways we have in mind have certain characteristics in common: a tropical climate, long white beaches, and crystal clear waters where you can swim, snorkel, and dive amongst the schools of fish. They are, in short, paradises of sun and sand, surrounded by a wreath of surf.

We have sought out a few private islands where you can get completely away from it all. You can’t beat them for seclusion, or, for that matter, the levels of luxury you’ll encounter. The World Travel Awards voted Thanda Island as the World's Leading Exclusive Private Island in 2016, and the following year it made Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List. Similar accolades have rightly been heaped upon Malayasia’s Gaya Island Resort and Azura Quilalea off the coast of Mozambique.

You don’t have to go to sea to find your island paradise, either. One of the most remarkable hideaways we’ve found - the Royal Chundu Island Lodge - is within the mighty Zambezi, a stone’s throw from Victoria Falls.

Accommodation:
Thanda Island

Why rent a room when you can hire a whole African island? Thanda Island is truly a once in a lifetime experience that offers a flavour of what it is like to be castaway - albeit one with every comfort and luxury.

Accommodation:
Miavana

Miavana is a luxurious island eco-resort set in an important Madagascan marine park. Come here for diving, snorkeling and whale watching, sleep out under the stars, or hire a helicopter to take to you on a day trip to a nearby island.

Accommodation:
Azura Quilalea

Azura Quilalea is your private island retreat in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Mozambique. Completely detached from the rest of the world, you can enjoy the eco chic resort in a pristine marine environment. It’s the island Robinson Crusoe wished he was marooned on.

Accommodation:
Royal Chundu River Lodge

After a heart-pounding experience at Victoria Falls, the perfect solution is to retreat to your private island at Royal Chundu Private Island Lodge, admiring the marvellous natural habitats in the quiet comfort of the wild.

Accommodation:
Misool Eco Resort

Misool Eco Resort is an exclusive dive resort and conservation centre located in remote Raja Ampat, West Papua. This private island resort is a tropical hideaway, hidden among an archipelago of uninhabited islands, fringed with powder white beaches and pristine coral reefs.
