Tortuguero is on the Northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, on the banks of the Tortugero River. The turtle which give it its name come here to nest, and are often visible on the beach in the evenings. One of our favourite experiences is taking the kids down to the water’s edge after dinner to watch the turtle come ashore and lay their eggs.
The lodge has 27 rooms, including rooms with balconies and even a penthouse suite. All of the rooms have excellent views of the river. There are no TVs or sophisticated sound systems; here, technology is replaced with the sounds of the tropical rainforest surrounding you. It’s a rare chance for all of the family to switch off their gadgets and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
The Junior Suites are ideal for families as you can connect two together, making for an extended private space which will sleep up to five people. There are hammocks in the front room, and your alarm call in the morning is courtesy of the howler monkey!
