Inspiration Odyssey: Finland

A day in the land of forest, lake and sky

Why Finland? You mean apart from pristine wild places, the world’s happiest culture, charming villages, unique design and amazing wildlife? Finland is a destination for the naturalist in us all. It is easily accessible from the UK and USA. Perfect for a short rewilding break, though with so much to see, you’ll want to take your time.

Finland’s landscapes are diverse, with stunning Baltic coast, vast lakes, dense forests and sub-arctic fells. It’s home to some of Europe’s densest wildlife populations. And Finnish philosophy encourages you to slow down, savouring every moment. So read on and draw some inspiration for a day in Finland.

Morning:
As you come to consciousness, you might hear your surroundings before you see them. Birds chime a dawn chorus as the sun ascends. This could quite literally be a cuckoo ‘clock’. Or a whooper swan floating across a nearby lake.
Morning:
If you’re here in summer, this will be an early alarm, urging you to get up and explore. While winter’s sleepy sun encourages you to spend a little longer in bed.
Morning:
As the world’s top coffee enthusiasts, it’s no doubt you’ll start your day with a warm brew and Scandinavian breakfast. Then you might head out wildlife spotting. Brown bears, wolves, lynx and moose are all common, though elusive. The forests are wildest on the eastern border, offering your best opportunities for sightings.

Day:
Lakes stretch for miles across the country. Grab a canoe and set out on a privately guided voyage of pristine nature. Finland's largest lake boasts the world’s rarest seal. The last ice age cut off Saimaa ringed seals from the sea, and it’s only here you can spot these quirky creatures.
Day:
The many forests are bountiful and cloaked in colour come autumn. Join a private guide, gathering berries and mushrooms, learning to live off the land like a local.
Day:
When winter blankets the land in snow, strap on snowshoes. Sun glimmers on icy branches, and if lucky you might spy a fox diving for its prey.

Night:
After dinner, soak the day away, Finn style. Relax with a drink in a traditional sauna, before moving outdoors to a wood-fired hot tub to watch stars emerge. Take time to slow down, appreciating earth’s many wonders.
Night:
October through April offer up one of nature’s great phenomena. As night falls, look skyward, as the northern lights dance in the dark. Many lodges are remote enough to see them from your suite. But why not add some magic to the experience on a midnight reindeer sleigh ride?
