Inspiration Odyssey: Sweden

Exploring the wild woods of Lapland

Join us for a moment of imagination. Close your eyes and picture a forest. The trees stand tall and evergreen around you. What do you hear? At first, unaccustomed to such remote wilderness, it seems quiet. Eerie silence. Then a bird chirps. A twig snaps. A river babbles nearby. Suddenly you’re enveloped in the primal symphony of nature, wondering how you ever thought there was nothing.

Thought steps back, instincts kick in while exploring the remote wilds of Swedish Lapland. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is merely a destination to take the children over the winter break. Northern Sweden is ripe for those seeking the solace of nature.

Swedish Safari
Swathes of forest and lowland tundra hide a menagerie of wildlife. You enter the wild domain of moose, wolf and bear. But how will you find them? Let us tell you. Based on bush camps from Africa, the owners of Aurora Safari Camp will take you overland on a number of adventures.
Swedish Safari
Kayak the gentle waters of the Råne River or float above the valley at dawn in a hot air balloon. Get active on fat bikes, or in winter try snowshoeing, skiing or kicksledding.
Swedish Safari
Sapmi Nature Camp offers an authentic immersion in Samí culture. Owner Lennart Pittia is your host, and will introduce you to his reindeer herd. He’ll take you birding or maybe foraging for a traditional evening feast. To see marine wildlife, try a boat safari on the Gulf of Bothnia in search of seals.

Survival Skills
It takes certain skills to live off the land this far north. Foraging, fishing and life lived in nature are part of Scandinavian heritage. We know expert local guides who can give you a crash course in Arctic survival.
Survival Skills
Salmon and trout are plentiful in the rich northern waters. Spend a morning casting out, catching just enough for your dinner. Of course, to complete your meal you’ll need more ingredients.
Survival Skills
Among the trees you’ll learn which herbs, berries and mushrooms will complement your meal. And which to avoid. Then you’ll learn how to combine all you’ve gathered over an open fire, enjoying a delicious meal beneath the stars.

Interesting Abodes
Renowned for architecture, Sweden brims with quirky places to stay. Treehotel is eclectic and family-friendly. Each of the seven suspended villas enjoys a spectacular forest view. Choose the Bird’s Nest, UFO or perhaps the 7th Room, where an ancient pine grows up through the floor.
Interesting Abodes
Activities abound — think beer tasting, pizza making, kayaking, hiking, dog sledding, bear safaris and more.
Interesting Abodes
Icehotel is another design marvel. Seasonal suites are carved from ice and snow. Grab a drink at the ice bar before venturing out; horseback moose safaris, ice sculpting, river rafting, northern lights hunts or a 12 course tasting menu at the Chef’s Table are all options.

Lapland Luxury
Inspired by the forest, Arctic Bath is a stunning example of natural luxury. The setting is peaceful, with water cabins and circular spa floating on the Lule River. Come winter, the landscape is transformed, casting everything in a blanket of ice and snow. Simply relax with holistic wellness treatments, or combine with more active excursions.
Lapland Luxury
Further north lies Riksgränsen. The mountain setting is a pristine ski destination, and so remote it feels wholly yours. There’s just a handful of luxury lodges, from which you can ski and explore.
Lapland Luxury
You might see reindeer, lynx and arctic fox while you’re about. Heli-skiing takes you to otherwise inaccessible slopes, blanketed for miles in fresh, untouched powder.
