Travelling well

What does it mean to travel well?

We believe that a wildlife holiday should be the experience of a lifetime for you. At the same time it has to positively help the beautiful places and people you’re visiting. We call this “Travelling Well”.

Travelling Well goes way beyond making your holiday carbon neutral by paying to plant trees. Of course, that helps, but travel shouldn’t be something harmful that needs neutralising! Travel should and can be a means of conserving and improving our world.

So how does it work?

Choosing the Right Partners
We operate in the world’s remote, delicately balanced places. They should be visited with a lightness of touch. We select lodges whose owners work in dynamic partnerships with nearby communities which benefit the people, the wildlife and the land. We usually find that such places have the happiest, most able staff and attract the best guides.

Pioneering Conservation in Africa
Places like Laikipia in Kenya have been pioneering sustainable ways of protecting rhinoceros, elephant and endangered wildlife for decades. In some cases poachers have become gamekeepers! These world leaders share their experience and ideas with other lodges throughout Africa. To visit these places and see this work in action is heart-warming and fascinating. It can be the basis of a great holiday.

And Worldwide
We are excited to see private reserves and national parks in South America and Asia following Africa’s lead. In the wetlands of the Brazilian Pantanal the Caiman Ecological Refuge has adopted conservation techniques used in the Okavango Delta. In Ecuador one of our partners has acquired 3,000 acres of cloud forest from a timber company, while in India patient conservation efforts have restored the populations of Asiatic lion in the forests of Gir.

Working with Charities
We give a minimum of 10% of our nett profits each year to charity. We have a longstanding relationship with expert charities like Send a Cow who give practical support to small farming communities. The Zambezi Expedition, now happening in May/June 2021 will see us and our clients travelling the length of the Zambezi in support of a ground-breaking project in Murchison Falls operated jointly by Send a Cow and pioneering conservation charity TUSK.

Giving You the Best Possible Holiday
Travelling Well means you have an amazing time in the world’s most beautiful places! It means us stretching every sinew to create a superb sequence of accommodation and experiences that is exactly right for you. The whole process must be stress free and in the unlikely event of a disruption we fix it immediately. Also, every itinerary that we create will set out for you the practical positive impact of your visit to each place.

And By the Way
From now on every holiday that we arrange will be carbon neutral, not just the air travel, but at ground level too.
