Ecuador’s cloud forests offer an ethereal adventure filled with misty mountainous jungles and thrilling, often adrenaline-filled activities. On a family expedition up into the clouds you’ll be surrounded by fascinating animals and plants, which you can explore by hiking and mountain biking along forest trails, whilst rafting and kayaking on the rivers, and from above when you climb an observation tower or walk along a suspended canopy bridge.
The Mashpi Reserve is Ecuador’s foremost research station for conservation and discovery in the cloud forests. Located at its heart, is Mashpi Lodge, one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World. Begin your days with breakfast watching vibrant birds from an open air observation deck before taking a sky lift through the canopy across the reserve – you’ll even be accompanied by monkeys playing in the tree tops. Afterwards you may choose to hike back through the jungle’s rivers, discovering and playing in waterfalls together.
The Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge is a sumptuously rustic accommodation where the kids can run wild. They can expend some energy by walking The Hummingbird Trail and exploring the remoter dirt tracks. Birding here is superb, so there’s always something new to see.
