Hiking and History in KwaZulu Natal

Trek back in time in this fascinating area

History comes to life on the fields of KwaZulu Natal. The passionate guides at Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, and Blood River - many of whom are respected military historians and archaeologists - have made it their life’s work to research and share the defining moments of one of the 19th century’s bloodiest conflicts.

Staying at Fugitives Drift Lodge, you are right in the heart of the action. David and Nicky Rattray pioneered Heritage Tourism in South Africa here, and the emotionally charged tours are exceptional in their detail and energy.

The Drakensberg Mountains are the dramatic backdrop to the battlefields, and they offer some of the best hiking trails in South Africa. The Fair Trade certified Three Tree Hill Lodge and Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse are two of our favourite places to stay, with easy access to hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding routes. Climb to the top of Sani Pass, visit the Crane Rehabilitation Centre, or learn about the 3,000 year old Bushman rock art at Kamberg and Giants Castle.
