Luxury & Big 5

Sumptuous suites in South Africa’s wildest reserves

Spotting Africa’s Big Five - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino - in the wild tops many a wildlife bucket list, and rightly so. These extraordinary animals are rare in their beauty, and play vital roles in the ecosystem. Game drives and bush walks in South Africa’s Kruger region will bring you close; and you can get closer still with intimate encounters such as elephant feeding, and other memorable interactions at Elephant Whispers.

The Kruger National Park itself has one of the highest concentrations of the Big Five, but in their wake come crowds of people on safari. We much prefer the quietness of the neighbouring private reserves, where you’ll have the same quality of wildlife sightings but without other people in the way.

Conde Nast Traveler rated Royal Malewane as one of the 50 Best Resorts in the World. A luxury safari lodge fit for a king, it exudes the romance of a bygone era. We’re also huge fans of Leopard Hills, whose eight stunning glass fronted suites overlook the elephant at the watering hole.
