Luxury Train Journeys

Elegance and Exploration aboard the Rovos Rail

When you travel across South Africa on a luxury train journey, you are reliving the golden age of rail. Steam hauled journeys celebrate special occasions, and on other routes beautifully restored (and more reliable!) diesel and electric engines are paired with vintage carriages dating from 1911 to the 1960s. Great care has been taken to preserve the cars’ original features, whilst upgrading them with essential modern facilities such as en suite bathrooms in the cabins and suites.

Rovos Rail operates thrilling itineraries within South Africa, plus cross border journeys into Namibia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. The Cape Town Journey is a 1,600 km meander through the Great Karoo, the mountains, and the Winelands to Pretoria; and the three day Durban Safari includes a private Big Five retreat in KwaZulu Natal and a ride through the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Life onboard is elegant: guests dress for dinner and spend time admiring the views from the Observation Cars. Cocktails are a must in the evenings, and there’s often live music onboard.
