Costa Rica for Families

Outdoor adventures abound for active families in this tropical wonderland

Experience the pura vida on a tropical trip in Costa Rica. Race through the treetops on a zipline and watch as the jungle whizzes past in a vibrant, emerald blur. Children of all ages will love a canopy bridge walk through misty cloud forests, blanketed in the chatter of monkey and jewel-toned birds. Back on the ground, you might choose to swim under turquoise waterfalls or even take an intrepid hike to see an active volcano.

Wildlife abounds in this biodiverse hotspot; keep your eyes peeled for jaguar and caiman, sloths and toucan as you trek on rainforest trails.

In Tortuguera, you’ll have the opportunity to take beach walks after sunset, entranced as you watch sea turtle hatching under a blanket of stars and racing across the sand to the safety of the sea. You can take to the waves yourself, scuba diving next to darting pods of dolphin and gently drifting whale shark; you’ll be in awe when you see speckled manta ray gracefully flying through the water.

Highlight:
Adrenaline junkies
Costa Rica is the eco-tourism capital of Latin America; it’s also the region’s adventure hub. Whether you get your adrenaline kick from summiting mountains, flying along zip lines through the rainforest, or white water rafting and kayaking, the family friendly activities are a thrill a minute.
Highlight:
Eco luxury hotels
Eco friendly doesn’t have to mean basic: in Costa Rica, you can surround yourself in sublime luxury and still be caring for the planet! We actively partner with superior lodges and camps with strong eco credentials and that work closely with local communities.
Recommendation:
Turtles and Tortuguero
Most small children go through a phase obsessed with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This may spark a lifelong interest in these curious reptiles; we think that they (and the entire family) will love seeing the real life turtle even more than their cartoon counterparts.
Highlight:
Beach activities
Costa Rica is tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, which gives it nearly 800 miles of coastline and 300 white sandy beaches. With family, there’s only so much sunbathing and reading in a hammock you can do, but thankfully there are plenty of beach activities, too.
Recommendation:
Cloud Forests
Costa Rica is one of the most varied places in the world, and within it, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is an incredibly peculiar ecosystem. The wind sculpted rainforest with its mountain peak backdrop is the perfect setting for a family adventure.

Accommodation:
Pacuare Lodge
Pacuare Lodge, nestled on the banks of the Pacuare River in eastern Costa Rica, is completely blanketed by the rainforest. You are in the wilderness, with exotic birds squawking in the trees, but sacrifice nothing in terms of comfort or luxury.
Accommodation:
Tortuga Lodge
Tortuga Lodge and Gardens is a tranquil, laid back hotel which champions rustic elegance. Tortuguero translates as “land of the turtles”, and indeed it’s the combination of conservation, fabulous beaches, and comfort which makes this such a superb place to stay.
Accommodation:
Hotel Belmar
Deep in the hills of Costa Rica’s Monteverde reserve is Hotel Belmar, a collection of wooden chalets with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a unique, family run property with an excellent range of activities in a truly idyllic location.
