Location
A luxury hotel in a beautiful and isolated location set between two canals, Manatus Hotel is only accessible by boat or plane. This is a truly untouched part of the Costa Rican rainforest, on the edges of Tortuguero National Park on Costa Rica’s north eastern coastline.
Accommodation
Manatus Hotel has just 12 spacious bungalow rooms connecting guests to their surroundings and provide a peaceful and comfortable haven in the heart of the rainforest. Rooms feature canopy beds, refreshing outdoor showers, and large peaceful terraces overlooking the waterways stretching out along the Caribbean coast. They are beautifully decorated, with modern furnishings and hardwood floors. We love the hand-painted sinks.
The Ara Macaw Restaurant and Morpho Bar serve some of the finest Afro-Caribbean fusion cuisine in the region, along with an extensive selection of colourful beach cocktails. There is also a small pool overlooking the canal from where you can survey the verdant haven and placid waters that make up the surrounding environment of the lodge. Your relaxation may be interrupted by the sound of Howler monkeys, but that is all part of the experience.
The lodge has a well-equipped fitness room and spa with a wide range of treatments available. Other options for relaxation include a frame or two of billiards in the bar or a browse through the hotel’s art gallery.

- Be sure to explore the waterways by canal boat to see unique wildlife. An early morning trip is best for spotting the lurking caimans.
- There are lots of hiking possibilities for you to venture into the rainforest, perhaps to indulge an interest in colourful tree frogs.
- The more adventurous guest may opt for a zip line adventure in the canopy.
- A closer and more silent approach to nature can be achieved in a kayak. From this, you are more likely to spot otters, river turtles, or an elusive manatee, the hotel’s mascot.
- You will love an excursion to the nearby Tortuguero Village to absorb the local culture by visiting the market and also engaging with local conservation initiatives.
- Dependent on the time of year you choose to come, you may even be able to watch the local green turtle lay their eggs on the beach at night, or even the baby turtles hatching and making their journey to the sea.
