Botswana Safari Downtime & Combinations
Between safaris there is plenty for children to do in camp while the adults relax. Safari lodges may be small and in remote locations, but they have excellent facilities and your hosts’ purpose is to give you the best possible time. In this section we also suggest a couple of places that combine easily to complement your Botswana safari.

Enjoy The Food
The quality of food at the exclusive lodges that we use is remarkable. And there’s lots of it! The aroma of fresh bread and hot coffee will enliven your tastebuds first thing. Then there is breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and cakes, nibbles with sundowners and finally a delicious dinner with something from the wine cellar.
The finest ingredients are flown in and herbs are grown in the lodge garden. The chefs are highly trained and work miracles in their bush kitchen. The kids might like to help bake a cake or make a pizza!

Relax
All the lodges that we use have a pool, usually with a great view. Some also have private pools set into the decking of your suite. Safari purists may hate it, but most lodges also have WiFi and all have electric generators.
There’s usually a spacious lounge with comfy chairs and a library so you can research what you’ve seen that morning. Your guide may be able to help you edit your photographs.

Explore The Lodge Grounds
There are strict rules about keeping to the elevated and ground level walkways! But if your children get itchy feet between safaris, your guide will be happy to take them on a ramble around the camp.
Maybe they could look for some of the “little five”—elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, rhino beetle, antlion and buffalo weaver.

Hop Across To Victoria Falls
The mile-wide waterfall is a couple of light aircraft hops away from Botswana’s safari regions. You might like to base your family at one of the superb lodges beside the Zambezi just upstream from the Falls, or a hotel at the falls on the Zambian or Zimbabwe side.
If you’re feeling active, try white water rafting, a microlight flight above the falls or even a bungee jump from the Victorian bridge over the raging cataracts.

Head South To Cape Town
Having travelled all the way to southern Africa, you might be tempted to add a few days in the Cape. It makes an enjoyable counterpoint to the wilds of Botswana, especially from November to April when weather in the Cape is glorious.
Ascend Table Mountain, shop, eat, watch live sport, watch whales, play a round of golf—the possibilities are as limitless as the two great oceans which meet there.
