Location
The Arenas del Mar resort is within walking distance of beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park. It has the advantage of being right on the Pacific coast, accessible from the capital city of San José, where the rainforest meets the ocean. The resort sits within 11 acres of private nature reserve and has access to two magnificent beaches.
Accommodation
We like the fact that this elegant hotel stands within such natural surroundings, and it is not unusual to see a monkey, iguana or even a sloth in the beautiful grounds. Inside, Arenas del Mar has 37 luxurious suites and rooms, designed to gain the best views possible of Manual Antonio National park and the Pacific Ocean from their balconies and large windows. We recommend you opt for a premium suite if you want a hot tub on your balcony.
The resort’s two world-class restaurants, Mirador Oceanview and the less formal Playitas Beachfront, serve some of the finest cuisine in Costa Rica using exclusively organic local produce. Top chefs from around the world are regularly invited here to cook for guests and they frequently give live demonstrations. We love the fact that you can get a lift in a golf buggy to Playitas Beach, where your table is in the sand.
Relaxation in the Las Brisas Wellness Centre may be your thing, or you could get out and explore the extensive options in the fabulous natural surroundings of the hotel. Small private groups led by experienced naturalists will ensure that you have the best chance of seeing Costa Rican wildlife at its very best.
Experiences
- Adrenaline seekers will find plenty of options here, from ziplining, to diving from a waterfall, to surfing lessons. A night time safari also gets the pulse racing.
- The people of the Quebrada Arroyo community will educate you about medicinal plants when you visit the Los Campesinos Reserve. Whilst there, you will also cross a suspension bridge 40m above a beautiful waterfall.
- Unleash your inner ape man with a visit to Tarzan Canopy, with its 12 platforms, 9 cables and a suspension bridge high in the forest branches.
- White water rafting on the Naranjo River, with its class III and IV rapids is a challenge for the physically fit and adventurous types. For less demanding rapids, The Savegre River is your option.
- Take a kayak through the tranquil ecosystem of the mangroves on Damas Island.
- Agroforestry enthusiasts can take a tour of a plantation to see and taste vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon, pepper and numerous other spices grown side by side with secondary rainforest.

Conservation
Arenas Del Mar is set within 11 acres of private nature reserve. The hotel itself covers less than 25% of the property, and the remainder acts as a biological corridor for wildlife, connecting the areas surrounding Manuel Antonio National Park.

In designing and building Arenas Del Mar, conservation has always been front of mind. A very limited number of trees were cut down during the construction process, and since then, 7,000 more have been planted.
